The classic NVIDIA control panel provides display, video, and 3D settings. By default, the display tab is not displayed on the MSI GE76 Raider 11UH laptop. This means that the display used is not directly connected to the NVIDIA GPU, and the integrated graphics are used.
This article will tell you how to enable the Display tab in the NVIDIA Control Panel. You only need to switch from integrated to discrete graphics. Not all laptops support this, a MUX & Advanced Optimus module is required. See the device specifications.
Why is there no Display tab in NVIDIA?
In short, to save energy, the video signal passes through the graphics core built into the CPU. The discrete graphics card performs heavy tasks, but the result is displayed by the built-in core (called Hybrid Graphics & Optimus mode). This means that the Intel driver is responsible for display settings.
MUX Swich module — allows switching between hybrid mode and discrete graphics. Advanced Optimus (NVIDIA Control Panel option) works similarly, only without forced reboot. After switching, the Display tab should appear.
How to Restore Display in NVIDIA Control Panel
MSI Center
It depends on your specific model. I’ll use the app MSI Center: in the subsection Functions > Basic settings > GPU Switch switch to Discrete graphics mode. A reboot is required, and in this mode, the Thunderbolt video output function will be disabled.
Advanced BIOS
The same can be done directly in the BIOS. During the boot process, click Of thethen press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+F2 — advanced BIOS mode. And then Advanced > MSI VGA MODE > Discrete MODE. Save the changes and reboot to see the NVIDIA Display tab.
External monitor
Another way to activate the discrete graphics mode: connect an external monitor and select it as the main one. My laptop received: 1x Type-C (USB/DP/Thunderbolt 4) and HDMI, which are connected to the discrete graphics card. After connecting, I get maximum performance.
Table 1. How to switch integrated graphics to discrete | |
ACER | Predator Sense > Settings > Discrete GPU only BIOS > Advanced > Display mode > NVIDIA GPU Only |
ASUS | ASUS Armoury Crate > System Configuration > GPU Mode |
AORUS | AORUS Control Center > Manager > Graphic Swich BIOS > Advanced > Switchable Graphics device > NVIDIA Graphics |
Dell | BIOS > Advance > Enable Hybrid Graphics/Advanced Optimus |
HP | OMEN Gaming Hub > Graphics Switcher > Discrete BIOS > Advanced > Built-In Device Options > Graphics > Discrete Graphics |
Lenovo | Lenovo Vantage> Hybrid mode BIOS> More Settings > Configuration > Graphics Device > Discrete Graphic |
MSI | MSI Center > Functions > General Settings > GPU Swich BIOS > Advanced > MSI VGA MODE > Discrete MODE |
Razer | Razer Synapse > System > Performance > GPU Mode BIOS > Chipset > GPU MODE > Dedicated GPU only |
XMG | Control Center > General Settings > Disable Nvidia Optimus BIOS > Switchable Graphics > Display Mode > dGPU only |
Conclusion
Disabling Intel(R) UHD Graphics via Device Manager will do nothing. Since the signal is intercepted by the basic video adapter driver (Microsoft). And to make the Display tab appear, you need to switch to discrete graphics. MUX Switch or Advanced Optimus will help with this.
Actually, Advanced Optimus is a technology for optimizing graphics switching for laptops, developed by NVIDIA. The function automatically uses only the integrated or discrete video card. This is the Auto Select mode, you can also take NVIDIA GPU only.
