Negative effects of laptop overheating

A laptop that overheats severely causes damage to internal components. Before this happens, the laptop must try to shut down. If you smell smoke, a burning smell, the cooler is not working, or the fan is running all the time, be careful not to damage your laptop.

Keep your laptop out of direct sunlight when taking it outdoors. Remember to keep your laptop away from extreme weather conditions. Some basic precautions and understanding what happens to your laptop when it overheats can help you avoid serious damage.

CPU

An overheated processor slows down and works less efficiently. In a computer system that is functioning properly, the fans should turn on when the processor starts to overheat. Turning off your computer and using compressed air to blow out dust accumulated in fans can help improve performance in dusty systems.

Battery

Most notebook computers contain lithium-ion batteries, which can be damaged by heat. Batteries operate by chemical interaction between negatively charged anode ions and positively charged cathode ions. When the computer starts to heat up, it speeds up this process and makes the ions move faster. The extra heat and increased chemical reaction will shorten the battery life and the time it stays charged. Long-term exposure to high temperatures may even damage the battery.

Motherboard

Motherboards serve as the frame for your computer. All important components of the computer, such as the processor, memory, and even fans, are connected to the motherboard. Several wires and copper components transmit electricity throughout the computer. When the computer begins to overheat, the efficiency and power of the electrical current decreases.

Using a computer monitoring application that shows power and temperature can demonstrate how severely overheating can affect the performance of your computer. For this reason, laptop owners using demanding applications or video editing software often use additional cooling, such as a cooling pad or external cooler.

Prophylaxis

Preventing laptop overheating should be a top priority for every user. Using a cooling pad can help reduce the heat generated from your laptop. Laptop cooling pads are only part of the solution, however, as they can mask a more serious internal cooling problem.

Clean your laptops regularly whenever possible, or have a professional fan cleaner if you don’t have the experience to do it yourself. Disassembling the laptop with the battery removed and cleaning the internal components can significantly reduce overheating of the computer.
