Third-party tools have been around for over a decade to help PC users display weather information right on the Windows taskbar. PC users who have been using Windows 7 for a long time know that there was a software called Weather Bar (it still exists) to display weather information on the taskbar. Needless to say, desktop gadgets were also present to display weather information on the desktop.
Windows 10 now displays weather information (version 2004 and newer) in the taskbar by default. The weather information in the taskbar is part of the new News & Interests feature. When you hover over weather information in the taskbar, a pop-up window pops up showing weather, news, financial information, and more.
NOTE. Users of versions 2004 and 20H2 need to install the optional update KB5001391 to receive this feature.
For most PC users, this is a welcome feature as they can view weather information without opening the Weather app. In addition, a pop-up menu displays relevant news and you can customize your feed to display what you want.
However, some PC users may want a clean taskbar. Or perhaps you want to save space on your taskbar. If you are one of them, you can remove the weather information from the taskbar and disable the pop-up menu that appears when you hover over it.
The Windows 10 development team knows very well what users want. This is why they provided the option to hide weather information from the taskbar.
Turn weather information on or off on the Windows 10 taskbar
Right-click on an empty spot in the taskbar, select News and Interests, and then click Disable to remove weather information, as well as news, finance, and sporting events.
Prevent news and widgets popup from opening when hovering over weather information in the taskbar
At the default settings, whenever you hover your mouse over weather information in the taskbar, a News and Interests pop-up appears. If you instead want to see the News and Interests pop-up when you click on the weather information (rather than when you hover over it), you can change that.
Right-click an empty space on the taskbar, select News & Interests, and then uncheck the Open on hover option by clicking on it.
That’s all! From now on, you need to click on the weather information (rather than hover over it) to see the News and Interests popup.
